Idea about the pain of heartbreak
The pain of heartbreak is similar to phantom limb pain. Because the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system are connected, they converse with each other, and they mutually release substances to maintain their connection with one another; the absence of that directly results in pain. If the intimate relationship between people no longer receives a response from one side, and the expecting party doesn't receive the anticipated sounds, touches, texts—these substances—it causes suffering. This is pain originating from the same neural source as phantom limb pain.
